Sweat Proof Makeup Tips And Keep Makeup In Summer Looking Fresh

Sweat Proof Makeup: Wearing makeup is part of peoples identity and many people wear it every day.
If you live in a hotter climate, keeping your makeup sweatproof can be a real struggle!

It can be a quick and simple routine with a couple of cosmetic products used.
For others, though, it can take a long time as makeup is used to accentuate certain facial features, or they may use makeup to camouflage features.

Makeup is also known as cosmetics, and the most common products that we are all familiar with are:

  • Lipstick
  • Mascara
  • Foundation
  • Blush
  • Powder

A little Bit Of Sweat Proof Makeup History

Sweat Proof Makeup artist tips

Makeup has been worn for thousands of years, and men and women would use cosmetics for different reasons.

Cosmetics were a way to keep complexions pale, as a pale complexion was a status symbol.

Many of the products used were highly toxic and caused a lot of harm with extended use. They often contained arsenic and lead.

In the late 1800s, cosmetics became safer when safer ingredients like zinc oxide started to be used. The well-known brand Rimmel was begun during this era.

Queen Victoria declared it vulgar and only suitable for stage actors.

In the 1920s, makeup became mainstream as women worldwide started to emulate the Hollywood actors on the big screen.

Why Do We Wear Makeup?

Wearing makeup has been happening since ancient times to the present day.

Here are some points that could justify why makeup is necessary.

  • Protects your skin from UV damage
  • Maintains a natural look
  • Improves self-confidence
  • Enhances your natural beauty
  • Is a confidence boost
  • Supports your career

Wearing Makeup In Hot Weather

We all look forward to having fun in the sun until we're stuck in the middle of relentless heat and humidity.

Poolside vacations and summer parties are great, but if you mix oily skin and sunburn, you can end up looking like a red hot mess?

Summer Makeup Tips For Sweat Proof Makeup

Summer is the time to be social – but socialising with melted foundation, smudged eyeliner, and smeared lipstick is not a look that anyone would want!

That's why we asked top makeup artists and our experts at Hair and Makeup Brisbane to share their best summer makeup tips.

These include tips and products that will help you keep your face looking natural, fresh and pretty, even when you're sweating on a hot day.

Start With The Right Moisturizer

Looking after your skin is as essential as the makeup you apply.

Even oily skin needs a hydration boost. Use an oil-free moisturiser and opt for an oil-free foundation formula, as this will make your face less oily throughout the day, especially in the heat.

Make Sun Protection A Priority

Sunscreen should be part of your daily routine year-round, but summer usually requires more care since we tend to sweat a little more, and what you applied in the morning can be gone by the early afternoon!

If you are actively out in the sun, reapplying sunscreen can be required every 2 hours, after swimming or excessive sweating.

Since reapplying throughout the day can be difficult, try spray-on sunscreen, which will give you UV protection from the sun without having to remove the products already on your face.

Our favourite sunscreen tip is to use a mineral foundation powder.

The mineral foundation powders contain physical sunscreen with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as the main ingredients. It is also perfect for oiler skin types.

It offers excellent coverage if you apply several layers or for lighter coverage; just a single layer over your skin will give some protection and coverage.

Please note – All sunscreens are not 100% effective. They all require reapplications if you are in and out of water or perspiring.

Be sensible when out in the sun – use sunscreen and stay out of direct sunlight in the hottest parts of the day.

Invest In A High-Performance Makeup Primer

Whether you opt for a simple makeup routine or you like to wear a full face, a makeup primer is an absolute must.

The extra few seconds it takes to apply a primer is always worth it!

Apply it after moisturiser and before makeup. When sweat and oil production is at its peak in the summer, a primer is a way to go.

A silicone-based primer will help to even out your skin texture and give a better base for makeup to stick to and help with giving you sweat-proof makeup. You may have to trial a couple of brands before you find the right one for you.

You can also get primers for your eyelids if you tend to get oily eyelids and hate your eyeshadow smudging or creasing.

Wear Less Makeup

In hot weather, a full face of makeup can not only feel heavy on your skin, but it can also look like overkill. So instead of a full face, keep your makeup light.

Start with sunscreen, follow with a tinted moisturiser or BB cream.

Use a mineral foundation powder if you require a little more coverage.

Correct any blemishes with your favourite concealer.

Mascara and lipgloss will finish off this daytime look.

Glow With Bronzer

For a natural summer glow, there's nothing better than a well-applied bronzer. Please do not go crazy with it and use it all over your face.

Use bronzer where you would naturally get a little more sun.

Apply a little on your nose, your forehead near your hairline ( if you wear your hair off your face)

Apply bronzer on your cheekbones and if you are wearing a strapless top – bronzer looks beautiful on your shoulders and collar bone.

It helps to add dimension to your face – So keep it to where you would naturally get more colour from the sun.

Powder bronzers are the easiest to apply and the least likely to shift in the summer heat. You can even apply a little bronzer to your neck and jawline if you wear a ponytail or have short hair.

Leave Out The Shimmer

The idea of a nice dewy glow sounds better than what it looks.

There's a big difference between a light summer glow and an overdone shine. Avoid creamy foundations or anything too shiny because humidity will make you look extra shiny and sweaty if you have too much shimmer on your skin.

Choose Sheer Tones

Rich, deep colours have their place, but they can look heavy in the summer. To brighten up your look, switch to lighter versions of your favourite lip and eye colours.

If you need extra lip definition, use a lip liner before application but choose a nude shade to keep the lighthearted feel, or try “invisible” lip liner, which applies a transparent, waxy film to prevent colour from bleeding.

On your eyes, apply lighter-hued eye colours and stick to just a single colour and create a wash of colour.

Give Your Eyeshadow The Ability To Last

To help make your eyeshadow last longer, avoid using an eye cream directly onto your eyelids and apply an eye primer instead. It minimises creasing and creates an excellent base for the eyeshadow to adhere to, so it lasts longer.

If you layer a powder eyeshadow over a cream eyeshadow, you can wear it all day. Doubling up also works for eyeliner. Apply your regular pencil or cream liner, then use a small angled brush to press the dark eyeshadow over the liner to set it and make it last longer.

Leave Out The Dramatic Blush

According to Hair and Makeup Brisbane experts, natural-looking blush will not only last all day, but it will also look better!

Try a blend of cream blush and a light cover of powder blush or even bronzer over it.

Blush adds dimension to your face; You do not want to look flat featured. Cream blushes, especially wax-based ones, are very long-lasting, and with warm weather, they blend in beautifully with your skin.

Pro tip: Want to increase the staying power?

Dust a light, invisible powder on top. Just make sure you don't apply it too thickly; you want to set your look, not matte it.

Play With Fun, Bright Colours

Just as you're more likely to wear a colourful top or carry a bright bag this season, now is the perfect time to amp up the colours in your makeup palette. Not only do more vibrant colours look summery, but they also make your face shine and give your skin a youthful glow. If you tend to stick with neutral colours, experiment with just one area of the face, such as a colourful eyeliner, coloured mascara or a pop of sheer lip colour.

Always Choose Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof or water-resistant mascara is a must in the summer.

Mascara is prone to streaking and smudging from sweat and moisture, but a waterproof formula will help keep the product in place. So invest in a good waterproof mascara, or if you're blonde, get your lashes tinted.

If you want to save time on your beauty routine – Try having a lash lift! They give you a beautiful result with your lashes curled and tinted and last 4 – 6 weeks!

Blott like you mean it.

Nothing is better than blotting paper to get rid of unsightly shine in seconds. Unlike a tissue, it absorbs oil and leaves the skin looking matte.

You can buy little packs of blotting papers, and they often have a powder finish to them, so you get to blot away the oil and powder at the same time. You do not want to be applying a powder puff to oily skin as the oil will soon build upon the powder puff and become a bed of bacteria!

Makeup tips

Swap Heavy Lipsticks For Lip Stains

Ditch your heavy, matte lipsticks for summer and try the easiest trend of the season: Lip Stains or Lip Balms. These long-wearing formulas offer light coverage that can be built up, making them very versatile. Try sweet pink or peach tones for a traditional summer look, or venture into tangerine for more daring.

Have A Stash In Your Handbag

To make sure you never look oily in photos again, be prepared with handbag-sized products that are perfect for carrying around to set your makeup on the go.

We have already mentioned blotting paper, so use this before you use a powder compact. This will keep the oil from building up on your powder press. Always carry a lip product! In warm weather, you tend to drink more, which will wear off any lip colour you apply.

Always Finish With A Setting Spray

The final step to making your makeup last all day and all night is to use makeup setting spray to seal in your look.

They really do work to help to keep your makeup in place!

 Go Light On The Fragrance

Our last tip, and even though it is technically not makeup, Don't layer on the heavy fragrances. In summer, they can become overbearing when you are in close contact with other people. Instead, opt for a fragrance with tangy citrus notes or very light florals.
